Health Begins in the Kidney

The kidneys are bean-shaped organs located near the middle of the back, just below the rib cage. The kidneys detoxify by filtering the blood, removing excess water and water soluble toxins which are then passed out in the urine. Kidneys maintain electrolyte balance by regulating the amount of sodium, chloride, sulfate, phosphate, and hydrogen substances in our body. It is important to drink enough water so that impurities are sufficiently passed out. Dark colour and smelly urine may be indicated that a person is not drinking enough water.

Having unhealthy diet and lifestyle, medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol increase the risk of having kidney disease. The followings are the common kidney diseases:
• kidney stones may cause extreme pain in the back or at the side of the body. Other symptoms may include fever and chills, vomit and the production of bloody, smelly and cloudy urine.
• Chronic kidney disease (CkD) refers to gradual loss of kidney function which may lead to permanent kidney failure and increase the risk of having stroke or heart attack. Most people do not have any severe symptoms until their kidney disease is advanced.
The symptoms may include hands or feet swelling, fatigue, itchy or numb skin, muscle cramps and poor appetite, nausea and vomiting.
• Pyelonephritis is kidney infection usually caused by bacteria that have traveled to the kidney from the bladder. The symptoms may include lower side and mid-back pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, shivering and painful urination.

TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDNEYS
• Drink at least eight glasses a day. Healthy kidneys need lots of water to “cleanse” them of impurities and of metabolic wastes.
• Reduce salty foods such as canned foods, fast foods and added sauces which increase kidney’s burden in excretion.
• Reduce alcohol intake as it can reduce the kidneys’ function.
• Don’t control your urge to urinate.
• Having a balanced diet is vital for kidney health.
Control medical conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure which are leading
causes of kidney disease.
