Omega-3 supplementation reduces nicotine cravings, helping smokers quit


(NaturalNews) In the largest city of northern Israel, the University of Haifa has shared their concluded research showing that omega-3 supplementation significantly reduces nicotine craving, not to mention the number of cigarettes a person smokes on any given day. The study was conducted by the head of the school of criminology department's addiction program, and the conclusions were published just last month by the the University.

Because of the adverse effects of medications, more and more smokers are turning to supplementation to kill the cravings, and thus kill the habit for good. It's working. Omega-3 is a relatively inexpensive and readily attainable dietary supplement that has virtually zero side effects. Coconut oil, hemp seed oil (yes, it's legal) and flax seed oil are phenomenal sources, but omega-3 can also be found in capsule form.

Dr. Sharon Rabinovitz Shenkar, head of the psychopharmacology laboratory and the criminology department, conducted the study and came to some very interesting conclusions that the natural health community has pondered for years.

The doctor says cigarette smoking reduces the levels of essential fatty acids in the brain, especially that of omega-3. This deficiency damages the structure of nerve cells and "interrupts neurotransmission in areas of the brain involved with feeling pleasure and satisfaction."

When people try to quit cigarettes, they experience a major nutrient deficiency which raises stress and tension levels. Attitudes and emotions can go "through the roof" if those new "non-smokers" don't get the right organic foods and supplements, like omega-3s. Nobody and no organization has studied this until now. When those studied came off the supplement, cravings did NOT return during the first month that followed treatment discontinuation.

From the abstract: "Cigarette smoke induces oxidative stress with subsequent polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) peroxidation. Low concentrations of omega-3 PUFAs can affect neurotransmission, resulting in hypofunctioning of the mesocortical systems associated with reward and dependence mechanisms and thus may increase cigarette craving, hampering smoking cessation efforts."

The liver is the most hard-working organ in the human body. It performs over 500 functions that are vital to life, as well as vital for detoxification. It plays an important role in digestion (breaking nutrients down) and assimilation (building up body tissues). Aside from the role it plays in digestion, it stores red blood cells and important nutrients like iron, copper, B12, vitamins A, D, E and K. It also has the unique ability to regenerate itself. You want to take really good care of this organ!

We are constantly being bombarded with toxins, and this organ is trying to take care of the issue. For example, people do not realize that when they eat large amounts of sugar, the liver has to stop detoxifying and deal with the sugar. Guess what p-aminophenol is? It is a synthetic dye used in hair coloring–produced from coal tar. Certain combinations of drugs can be toxic to the liver; so can taking some medicines while drinking alcohol. Wash your hands

Now, let’s talk about something that you probably think is remotely related. It’s the importance of washing your hands. Good grief, is that so hard to do? After a bowel movement, for example, that paper you use to clean up with is thinner than a politician's election promise (LOL!). Do you really think the tissue keeps you hands squeaky clean? Less than 100 years ago, it wasn't necessary for most Westerners to take nutrient supplements. Our soil was rich in essential minerals, our diets were packed with organic and home-grown food, and our environment contained far fewer health-destroying toxins.

Fast forward to the 21st century, however, and much has changed. Due to ongoing soil erosion, widespread pollution and much more, it is now difficult for many of us to obtain all of our essential nutrients from regular foods alone. Deficiencies in several important vitamins and minerals -- deficiencies that were once unheard of -- are now a pandemic in the Western world.

This article contains a list of four supplements which, if taken daily, can help correct many of the nutrient deficiencies we face today. Of course, other supplements might be required depending on your personal needs.

A nutrient-rich superfood
Perhaps the most important supplement we can take is a dedicated whole food supplement that contains a robust and well-rounded nutrient profile. Though opinions differ on which whole food is best for this purpose, you can't go wrong with established superfoods such as Moringa oleifera, chlorella, spirulina, wheatgrass or barley grass. Taking one or more of these foods in concentrated supplement form daily is an excellent natural alternative to commercial multivitamin tablets, which are usually comprised of synthetic ingredients that can inhibit absorption rates.

Magnesium
According to the American Chiropractic Association, between 68 and 80 percent of the United States population is estimated to be deficient in magnesium, an essential macromineral responsible for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body.(1) Insufficient magnesium intake can result in chronic fatigue, muscle cramps, muscle weakness and, in the most serious instances, significant personality changes and heart failure.

While a wide variety of magnesium supplements are on the market today, most of them tend to work better as laxatives than actual sources of dietary magnesium. Magnesium glycinate is one of the best choices, since it is highly bioavailable and doesn't contribute to loose stools.(2) For maximum benefits, take between 400 and 1,000 milligrams of it per day.(3)

Iodine
Like magnesium, iodine is another essential mineral in which most of us are unknowingly deficient. In fact, unless you happen to live near the ocean and consume large amounts of fresh seafood, you're probably seriously lacking in iodine. Iodine deficiencies can significantly reduce our thyroid hormone levels, causing us to retain water, gain weight, develop heart failure and more.(4)

Though many people experience good results with liquid iodine supplements such as Lugol's iodine or nascent iodine, the most natural option is a seaweed supplement such as kelp or bladderwrack. Aim for between 500 and 1,000 micrograms of iodine per day.(5)

EPA and DHA
It is a well-known fact that the average Westerner consumes far more omega-6 fatty acids, which are commonly found in processed vegetable oils, than omega-3 fatty acids. In fact, our average omega-6 and omega-3 ratio is currently estimated to be 15:1 -- far greater than the optimum 4:1. This imbalance promotes the pathogenesis of many serious diseases, including cancer and heart disease.(6)

To help correct this imbalance, it's important that we both reduce our intake of foods rich in omega-6 fatty acids and increase our intake of omega-3 fatty acids. The best way to achieve the latter is to supplement our diet with good sources of the two preformed (and thus more potent) kinds of omega-3 fatty acids, namely eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

As most people are aware, high-quality fish oil is the king of EPA and DHA. For best results, aim for at least 1,000 milligrams of fish oil-derived EPA and DHA per day.

Medical device actually spreads cancer in women, FDA warns


A medical procedure used on women preparing to undergo surgery for uterine fibroids may actually spread cancer throughout the body, potentially turning easily treated cancers into life-threatening forms, the FDA has warned.

The procedure, performed by a device known as a power morcellator, consists of pulverizing uterine fibroids prior to surgery, in order to allow their removal with a much smaller incision. If there is any cancer in the uterus, however, power morcellation also shatters the tumors, spreading cancerous tissue through the abdomen and potentially inducing metastasis. Because it is impossible to determine if a women has uterine cancer before performing the surgery, there is no way to prevent this risk.

"There is no reliable way to determine if a uterine fibroid is cancerous prior to removal," said Dr. William Maisel, deputy director for science and chief scientist of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health. "Patients should know that the FDA is discouraging the use of laparoscopic power morcellation for hysterectomy or myomectomy, and they should discuss the risks and benefits of the available treatment options with their health care professionals."

According to the FDA, two dozen women had their uterine cancers worsened by power morcellation in the last year alone.

"We believe that in the vast majority of women, the procedure should not be performed," Maisel said.

One in 350 had their cancer worsened
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the smooth muscle tissue of the uterine wall that most women develop at some point in their lives, typically without symptoms. In some cases, however, the condition can cause problems severe enough to warrant surgery.

Traditional treatments for uterine fibroids include a full surgical hysterectomy or myomectomy, laparoscopic ("keyhole") hysterectomy or myomectomy, and non-surgical interventions. In recent years, power morcellation became a popular pre-treatment to laparoscopy.

Concerns began to arise about the procedure last year, however, after Amy Reed, a doctor married to a surgeon, underwent power morcellation and developed stage 4 cancer as a result. Although Reed was fortunate enough to recover, her husband Hooman Noorchashm has since led a campaign to get the procedure banned. In April, a major manufacturer of the devices pulled them from the market, leading to a significant drop in the number of procedures performed. Many hospitals (including the one that performed Reed's surgery) have stopped using the devices.

According to Maisel, approximately 50,000 women per year might have used power morcellation prior to April 2014. One in 350 of those would have experienced a spread in uterine cancer as a result.

Because morcellated tissue is analyzed immediately following the procedure, the FDA believes that all cases of cancer were identified, Maisel said. Women who underwent power morcellation but did not hear from their doctors should have no need to fear.

Discouraged, but not banned
The FDA announcement stopped short of an outright ban on the procedure, instead advising strongly against it and urging both women and their doctors to discuss all available treatment options, including the risks and benefits of each. The agency has also called on manufacturers of power morcellators to revise the product labels, and is considering the implementation of a black box warning.

"Input from clinical and scientific experts will help provide valuable information and perspectives to clarify the proper clinical role for these devices," Maisel said.

Part of the reason the FDA did not ban the devices, Maisel said, is that they might still be useful in younger women with a low risk of uterine cancer, in order to help them lower the risk of uterine surgery resulting in infertility.

Noorchashm, in contrast, still insists that the devices should be banned.

India’s Direct Selling Industry Has Potential To Engage 18 Million Sellers By 2025: Report


The report indicated that with the right policy stimulus, this industry might well reach its potential of Rs. 64,500 crores, a nine-fold increase in twelve years.

Paswan released this report along with Keshav Desiraju, Secretary Consumer Affairs, Sidharth Birla – President of FICCI, Kurush Grant ED of ITC, as well as other industry representatives.

The FICCI conference was attended by a number of India and global industry dignitaries and other stakeholders.

Direct selling is a global industry, operating in over 100 countries with a market size of USD $167 billion. It refers to the selling of goods and services to the consumers away from a fixed retail outlet, generally in their homes, workplace etc., through explanation and demonstration of the product by direct sellers. USA, Japan and China are key markets for the industry.

In India the market is estimated to be around Rs. 7,200 crores, which is a far smaller percentage of the size of the economy, when compared to other countries. The FICCI-KPMG white paper launched highlights the challenges faced by the industry in India, and suggests a roadmap for enabling the industry going forward.

At the release, the Union Minister said, “I acknowledge the contribution of Direct Selling industry towards offering greater choices to the consumers. My Ministry appreciates the need of creating a regulatory framework for the direct selling and e-commerce sectors. We have recently formed an Inter-ministerial committee to deliberate on the need and framework of regulations for the Direct Selling industry. We feel it is important to distinguish between the genuine and fraudulent players, and any regulation that is proposed should keep in mind the interest of consumers as the first priority.”

Secretary, Desiraju further said, “We are hopeful that the proposed changes to the Consumer Protection Act will strengthen consumer welfare. There is a need to differentiate direct selling from other fraudulent schemes masquerading in the market as direct selling. With internal trade falling under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs as per the allocation of business the Ministry seeks to play an important role in regulating activities which impact on consumers. The industry needs to have a regulator to look at its issues more closely and resolve them.”

According to the report, direct selling is one of the fastest growing non-store retail formats in India, recording double digit growth of more than 20% over the past five years. In the year 2012-13 it has been estimated to contribute taxes of Rs. 1,000 crore to the exchequer.

Besides, the industry also has a significant impact on socio-economic parameters because of its nature. In less than two decades, since it took-off in India, it has provided self-employment opportunities to more than 50 lac people in India as direct sellers, the report stated.

Nearly 60%of these direct sellers are women, thus empowering them with additional income and transferable skills. The industry also generates direct employment through manufacturers and other service providers involved throughout the value chain of the industry. The industry has led to technology percolation and enhancement of many SMEs by association with international companies. Also, many direct selling companies have been in the forefront by actively contributing towards social activities, it said.

"Going forward, the industry has the potential to reach a size of INR 64,500 crores by 2025 driven by growth in the consumer markets and increase in the penetration of direct selling to globally comparable levels. This will have a cascading effect on the socio-economic parameters associated with the industry. There will be commensurate capital investments in manufacturing and in technology acquisition," said the report.

The report also highlighted the need to bring regulatory certainty for the industry, which is mistakenly coupled with fraudulent money circulation schemes because of a lack of clarity in existing legislations.

The report also laid out a roadmap for mitigating the regulatory challenge for the industry by recommending an immediate amendment in the governing legislation, followed by a clear definition and categorization as “wholesale cash and carry trade” to smoothen FDI inflow, and an independent legislation and nodal ministry for the industry thereafter.

Sidharth Birla, President, FICCI commented on the occasion saying, “The industry holds large potential not only for the economic, but also social development of India. With growth in the industry, it is projected to employ nearly 1.8 crore direct sellers, with almost 1.1 crore of them as women. The industry is also expected to contribute a tax of INR 9,000 crore to the exchequer. Hence, it is important that the growing economy like India should encourage rightful emerging businesses by creating a favorable policy environment.”

Kurush Grant, Chairman FICCI FMCG Committee said, “Direct Selling to consumers has been one of the oldest methods of distribution for FMCG and other consumer goods in India. Encouraging this business model would promote employment in India at the economic level where employment is most needed.  Since most of the products sold through this channel are locally produced, this is also in tandem with the 'Make in India' objective of the Government.  I recognize that there have been certain gaps which have restricted this channel to reach its true potential. I am happy that the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has acknowledged these gaps and would work towards bridging the same."

Rajat Wahi, Partner, KPMG, mentioned in his address at the conference: “The direct selling industry is unique in the number of people it engages with directly. No other industry is able to touch so many lives, or is as close to its customers as direct selling. The benefits of the industry have been recognized globally, and it holds large potential in India as well. There is a need to create an enabling environment for the industry to thrive.”

Garlic ‘Could Beat Leading Big Pharma Drugs’ A Natural Hypertension Remedy - Without Side Effects


Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is known as “the silent killer”, as it often goes unnoticed until it is too late. It is primarily caused by atherosclerosis, which frequently culminates in a sudden event such as a heart attack or stroke. While drugs for hypertension such as beta-blockers can cause side effects, including fatigue, blurred vision, or difficulty breathing, a groundbreaking new study has fortunately revealed that garlic is as effective as the “blockbuster” beta-blocker atenolol.

For the study, researchers at the King Khalid University of Saudi Arabia gave patients either one of five doses of garlic – 300mg, 600, 900, 1200 or 1500mg – , 1 dose of atenolol, or a placebo every day for 24 weeks. Blood pressure was taken at 0, 12 and 24 weeks. The results showed decreases in blood pressure, in dose and duration dependent manners, in all treatment groups and in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.


However, 1500mg per day of garlic had the strongest effect of all garlic treatment groups, with systolic blood pressure dropping from 145.2mm Hg to 137.6 at 24 weeks, while those on atenolol experienced a decrease from 147.8 to 138.6mm Hg. This is a drop in 7.6mm Hg and 9.2mm Hg respectively. As for diastolic blood pressure, patients on 1500mg of garlic each day had theirs decrease from 91.93 to 86.96mm Hg, a 2.97mm Hg drop, and patients on atenolol saw a decrease from 98.26 to 89.15mm Hg, or a 8.91mm Hg reduction.

The researchers then deemed these results to be comparable to the effects of beta-blockers, but without the nasty side effects.

Garlic has been found to improve cardiovascular health through several mechanisms of action. One mechanism behind garlic’s ability to lower blood pressure is the ability to keep blood vessels appropriately dilated. Raw garlic’s superiority over aged or boiled garlic was demonstrated again in other research where it preserved coronary blood vessel cell function, thereby inhibiting ventricular hypertrophy.

Outlining other health benefits of garlic, a small study has shown that 4mL of aged garlic extract daily reduces the rate of coronary calcification by over half, bringing it down to 7.5% as opposed to 22%. These patients were receiving statin drugs, but were still at high risk for cardiovascular events. In another study, a water-based extract of garlic was shown to significantly lower thromboxane B2, meaning it has an anticoagulant effect. However, boiled garlic had very little anticoagulant activity, so it should be eaten raw if you want to receive this benefit.

This anticoagulant activity is important because inappropriate blood clots often form over atherosclerotic plaques, commonly breaking off and traveling through the body. Eventually, these can become lodged in a blood vessel in the heart or brain, leading to a heart attack or stroke. Garlic may also be protective against CVD by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, which are now known to be drivers of atherosclerosis.

The common and overlooked herb garlic effectively supports cardiovascular health; this has been proven countless times in its thousands of years of usage and by many scientific studies.
